How to get the best rental experience:
Getting the best rental value:
- To find the best value, change your family's Charleston area vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- The sooner you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental property six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
- Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guides which often include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Selecting the best rental home:
- Select vacation week and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Southern Charms Duplex on Spring <> Sleeps 12! has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you looking for unique amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
More tips for your stay:
- Add the owner's contact info to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Note any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of issues.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
- Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
