Tips and Tricks for getting the best Charleston area rental experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring months is a good way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some property management companies offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Selecting the best vacation home in the Charleston area area:
- Start by selecting your trip dates and a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Renovated, Charming 3 BR Villa in WD, Golf Cart Included, & Short walk to Beach! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking pages. If not, call the property manager before you book the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your family.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
Additional considerations:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
- To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas upon check in. Get in touch with the host right away to report any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Hosts rely on good ratings to drive more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
