Strategies to get the optimal Charleston area vacation home experience:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in Charleston. To find the best value, try shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guides have offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.
Selecting and booking the right Charleston area rental home:
- Start by selecting your a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. The Lodge Alley Inn™ - Studio (1Q) has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before you reserve the property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is optimal for your vacation.
- Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask your host about pet restrictions before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Know before you go:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
- During arrival, note any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a terrific time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
