Our top Charleston area vacation rental booking tips and tricks:

When to book & When to go:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. Book your Charleston area vacation in Fall or Spring months to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Choosing and booking your Charleston area vacation home:

  • First, have your family select the best dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Oceanfront Condo in Wild Dunes! Community Pool! Great View of Beach! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. If they are not listed, email or call the host before you book the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property manager about pets before booking.
  • Are you looking for unique amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking

More considerations for your visit:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of issues.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
  • During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be respectful. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a fantastic time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
