Our top Charleston rental home tips:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • The earlier your group can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Booking your Charleston area vacation home in Fall or Spring months is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain coupons for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Make a plan and choose the perfectrental:

  • Select your vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. The Gentian House
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before you reserve the rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Have a great stay:

  • Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of problems.
  • Lock your rental while you are out. Protect your property!
  • Upon check-in, note any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on good reviews to propel future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
