Tips to get the perfect Charleston area rental experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To find the best value, try changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Planning, selecting, and booking a perfectrental home:

  • Select vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. 17 Marsh Island Lane by AvantStay
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you book the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
  • If there's a specific Charleston area attraction you long to visit, look for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.

More considerations:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
  • At Check-in, note any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect your property!
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a wonderful time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
