Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

How to get the best value:

  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To book the best vacation home within budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Charleston area restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guide magazines which include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Narrow your Search:

  • Start by choosing your trip dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. ?THE INNS? Elegant 1BR/1BA Carriage Home Downtown! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property owner before you book the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If there's a certain Charleston area beach you long to visit, search for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or costs could be applied to your contract.

Advice for a terrific stay:

  • Add the host's information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Document any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if damages are assessed.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
