Strategies for getting the best Charleston rental home experience:

Get the best value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Charleston area area. Booking your vacation rental in the Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Choose vacation week and max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. The Rainbow Cottage
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible online. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what is suitable for your vacation.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Get information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

Tips for a smooth stay:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Note any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many concerns.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to compel future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
