Our top Charleston area rental booking tips and tricks:
How to get the best value:
- Summer is high season in Charleston. To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Charleston area trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers usually offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have money saving offers on nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Filter your search:
- Select your vacation week and maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Downtown Condo Just Steps to Upper King has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, email the host before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly rental. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations for your visit:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a terrific resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental home while you're out. Keep your property safe!
- Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a excellent stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
