Tips to get the best Charleston vacation home experience:
Find your best deal:
- Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is a good way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The earlier you can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are booked early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
- Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have coupons for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Selecting the perfect rental home in Charleston:
- Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Charleston Charmer! 4BR steps from King Street! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation.
- If there's a particular Charleston area destination you simply love, search for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or could be applied to your contract.
More tips for your stay:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if there is a dispute.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Double-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property managers rely on good feedback to drive new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your review find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
