Strategies to get the very best Charleston area rental experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To book the most suitable vacation home within your budget, we suggest booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Charleston area restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property management companies usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Many management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Begin by selecting vacation dates and a budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Interior Designer's Dream - 4 Bedroom in Historic Charleston has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If they are not listed, call the property manager before you book the rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation family.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Some things to know before you go:
- We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of problems.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute is filed.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a fantastic resource to find the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- When it's time to leave, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a great stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
