Tips for getting the best Charleston area vacation property experience:
Get the most from your spending budget:
- Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have discounts for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Planning and choosing the right Charleston area rental:
- Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a spending budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. SUNSET (3BR) Best of Charleston Award has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. If they are not listed, email the host before booking your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is best for your vacation.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
Considerations for your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
- During arrival, make note of any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few problems.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let burglars spoil your holiday.
- At departure, take a walk-through to confirm you did not forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to drive new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
