How to get the best Charleston area rental home experience:
Find your best deal:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Charleston area area. Book your rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- The earlier you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have deals for local tours, shops, and attractions.
How to select the perfect rental:
- Choose a group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Downtown Charmer! 3BD\/3BA ? 2 Blocks to King has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. If not, contact the property manager before you reserve the property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what is right for your trip.
- If there's a specific Charleston area destination you are enamored with, search for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. Store the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all belongings. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a great time? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
