Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Charleston area rental home experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved early. Booking your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- To get the best value, change your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Some owners offer rate reductions for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers frequently offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- First, have your group agree to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Sleeps 6
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible online. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before you book the rental. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to establish what is best for your vacation.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask your host about pets before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
During your stay:
- Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of issues.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out. Keep your property safe!
- Upon check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just before checking out, take a walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
