Getting the best vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Book your vacation in Fall or Spring to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have coupons for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and select a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Charming Coach House, steps from MUSC has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before reserving your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your agreement.
Additional considerations:
- Be sure you get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- To make certain that no damages are attributed to your visit, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Make contact with the host right away to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
- Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on great feedback to propel more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
