Strategies for getting the best Charleston vacation home experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring months is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines have coupons for nearby shops and restaurants.

How to choose the best rental home in the Charleston area area:

  • Start by having your family commit to date ranges and a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Stunning Stono River Guesthouse w\/ Scenic Water Views & Pool has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the host before booking the rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More tips for your visit:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your .
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • During check-in, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to compel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
