Tips and Tricks to get the best Charleston vacation rental experience:

Sticking to a rental home budget:

  • Summertime is high season in the Charleston area area. Book your vacation in Fall or Spring to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked early. Booking your vacation home six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have deals for local shops and restaurants.

Filter your search:

  • To start, have your group commit to the best dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Petunia Suite
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or applied to your agreement.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the property manager's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local beaches.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a fantastic stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
