Vacation rental home tips:

Get the best value:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best value, change your vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines have discounts for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Planning, selecting, and booking the best Charleston area vacation home:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Available August 2!Modern Townhome Centrally located close to beach and downtown has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before booking the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Request details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Is your group looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out. Protect your property!
  • During check-in, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property a final time and scan for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
