Getting the best Charleston rental experience:
When to reserve a Charleston area rental home & When to go:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, try shifting your family's Charleston area vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Choose vacation dates and budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Prime Access to KING STREET - Downtown 2 Bedroom! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If not, reach out to the property management company before you book the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation group.
- If your group is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
More considerations for your visit:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent many concerns.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect your property!
- During check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all of your things. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
