Tips to get the perfect Charleston area vacation home experience:

When to go & When to reserve a rental home:

  • Summer time is high season in the Charleston area area. To get the best value, consider shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental home 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Property managers often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Filter your rental search:

  • Start by selecting your potential vacation weeks and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Upgraded SEAGROVE Villa! Beachside, Desirable Location! Pool Access! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
  • Does your family require special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your contract.

Additional considerations:

  • Get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a terrific time? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
