How to get the best Charleston area rental home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • To get the best value, shift your family's Charleston area vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • In the Charleston area area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Filter your search:

  • To start, have your group select trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. East Bay Home *Historic District* Walk Everywhere! has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is often available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the host before reserving the rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your contract.

Know before you go:

  • Add the property manager's phone number to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your stay, inspect the property for any problem areas during check in. Call the host immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on good feedback to drive future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
