Charleston vacation rental tips and tricks:
When to visit Charleston & When to book:
- In the Charleston area area, The earlier your group can book, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved early. Booking your rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Charleston area area. To find the best value, consider changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Property management companies sometimes offer special rates for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines contain coupons for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Choosing the perfect rental:
- First and foremost, have your group select trip dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Charming Downtown - 5 Bedroom Historic Home has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before booking your home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what is best for your group.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about pets before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
More considerations:
- Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Upon check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property one final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent feedback to inspire new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
