Our top Vacation rental home tips:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • Summer time is high season in Charleston. Reserve your Charleston area vacation home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property managers often offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • First, have your group agree to the best dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Dream Weaver
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property management company before booking the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly rental. Get specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.

Advice for a smooth stay:

  • Get the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Upon check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a great stay? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
