Strategies to get the best vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your rental home budget:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. Reserve your Charleston area rental in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Booking websites typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have deals for local shops and restaurants.
How to choose the best rental home in the Charleston area area:
- Choose vacation dates and budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Large Home Right by the Beach! Private Pool & Elevator! Fun Backyard w\/ Swingset has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the host before booking the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to determine what is suitable for your family.
- If your group is bringing pets, you will need a pet-friendly property. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Does your family require specific amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Additional considerations:
- Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
- At Check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and scan for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great ratings to inspire more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
