Tips and Tricks for getting the best vacation rental experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is high season in the Charleston area area. To find the best rental home within budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Charleston area restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Some property managers offer rate reductions for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for local tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Begin by selecting your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Boutique Home & Resort Pool ‘Nantucket’ has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. If not, contact the property manager before you reserve the rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would at home.
- To make sure that damages are not attributed to your family's visit, inspect the property for any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the rental manager right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a great time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
