Booking the best rental experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, consider changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Hosts sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group.
- Booking websites frequently offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guides have discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Planning and picking the perfect Charleston area vacation home:
- Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. Wonderful New Construction Home w\/ Private Pool! 6 Bedrooms and 6 Full Baths! has 6 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before you book the rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
- If there's a particular Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
More tips for your visit:
- Be sure you get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few concerns.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Hosts rely on excellent ratings to drive future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will will be grateful for your review find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
