Tips to get the best Charleston area rental home experience:
When to visit & When to reserve a rental home:
- Booking your Charleston area vacation home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The earlier you can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are booked early. Booking your vacation home six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
- Some owners offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain deals for local accommodations and attractions.
Planning, picking, and booking your prefect Charleston area vacation home:
- Choose a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Downtown 3 Bedroom with Lots of Natural Light has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, email the property owner before you book the home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to determine what is best for your vacation.
- If there's an individual Charleston area beach you long to visit, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or applied to your invoice.
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During arrival, document any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
- On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
