Our top Charleston rental home tips and tricks:

Getting the best value:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Book your rental property in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.

Make a plan and pick the bestrental:

  • Start by selecting your potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. The Iris, Signature Suite has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving your rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your group.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you looking for unique amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .

More tips for your visit:

  • We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To make sure that no damages are linked to your family's stay, inspect the property for any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the property manager right away to record any issues. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything on check-out day. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
