Tricks and tips to get the very best Charleston area vacation property experience:
When to book a Charleston area rental home & When to go:
- Summer time is high season in Charleston. Reserve your Charleston area rental home in Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites often offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Start by choosing your trip dates and a budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration you need. The Iris, Signature Suite has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly available online. If not, email the host before you reserve the property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
During your stay:
- Put the host's information in your smartphone.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute arises.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
