Tips to get the best vacation home experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Charleston area trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, , and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain deals for local tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- To start, have your family commit to date ranges and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. 2 bed\/ 2 bath! Fenced in yard-close to the beach and dwntn CHS! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before booking the rental. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to establish what is best for your trip.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or costs applied to your invoice.
- Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
During your stay:
- Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Upon check-in, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the rental a final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to propel future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
