Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area vacation rental experience:

Finding your perfect rental:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Reserve your vacation home in Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • In the Charleston area area, The earlier you can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.

Planning, selecting, and booking your Charleston area rental home:

  • First, have your family choose the best dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Downtown Home with Piazza, Yard + FREE Parking has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before reserving your home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or might be applied to your agreement.

Additional considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Upon check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • At departure, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
