Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Sticking to your spending budget:
- Summer months are high season in Charleston. Book your Charleston area vacation in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The sooner your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
- Some property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Property managers often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitors guides which include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Selecting and booking the right Charleston area vacation home:
- Select vacation dates and max budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Downtown Home with Piazza, Yard + FREE Parking has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually available online. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before booking your home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what is best for your group.
- If there's an individual Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. .
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or charges applied to your invoice.
More considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of issues.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often a great source for finding the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
