Charleston area rental home tips and tricks:
When to go & When to book:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. To find the best value, consider changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Often, management companies supply Charleston area area travel guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Selecting the best vacation home in Charleston:
- Begin by choosing your a vacation week and a budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Downtown Home with Piazza, Yard + FREE Parking has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before you book the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine which bed configuration is best for your family.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a certain Charleston area attraction you are enamored with, browse rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. .
During your stay:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local scenic spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
