Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Charleston vacation property experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- Summertime is high season in Charleston. To get the largest rental for your budget, we recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property managers often offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
How to choose and book your Charleston area rental home:
- Choose your dates and maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. James Island 1BR Eco-Haven: Beach+Golf+Downtown! has 1 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible online. If not, call the host before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what bed configuration is best for your group.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- If there's a certain Charleston area beach you crave, search for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
Considerations for your stay:
- Put the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, record any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great stay? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
