Tips and Tricks for getting the best Charleston rental home experience:

Sticking to your rental home budget:

  • Summer time is high season in the Charleston area area. To find the best value, consider changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your rental home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer special rates for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Choose a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Walk Everywhere - Newly Renovated - 5BR\/5BA! has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available online. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before you reserve the rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what configuration is right for your vacation.
  • If there's a certain Charleston area beach you simply love, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Record any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of problems.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent source for finding the best local beaches.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great ratings to stimulate new bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
