The Space:
George’s King Suite
Third floor king suite that is reportedly haunted
Private bathroom
349 sf, sleeps 2

To understand why this is “George’s Suite,” you must first know the history of The Nicholas. Henry Cobia, an early owner of the property, also owned slaves. During the 1830s, a male and female slave lived in a room on the third floor of the home along with their nine-year-old son. In 1843, due to financial difficulty, Cobia was forced to sell numerous of his slaves, which included the boy's parents. The next day, the little boy walked down to a dock on Charleston Bay and asked a man where his parents were taken. He was told that they had been transported to a ship that was currently docked in the middle of Charleston Harbor. Motivated by the hope that he might be reunited with his parents, the boy stole a rowboat and rowed in the direction of his parents' ship. All at once, the little boat capsized, and the boy drowned.

Guests have reported seeing the ghost of a little boy playing around the halls, then disappearing from sight. Former employees affectionately named him, George. Some may view this as unsettling and others may view it as alluring, but George reportedly just engages in harmless mischief that includes opening doors, rocking chairs and turning lights on and off. Most of the disturbances take the form of bed shaking or the radio turns on in the middle of the nighttime.

George’s King Suite occupies the top floor of The Nicholas overlooking Wentworth Street. This roomy suite features a king-sized bed and private reading nook. The freshly refreshed bathroom features a huge walk-in shower and posh luxury water fixtures and vanity. The room has all of the hotel’s original appeal and character with chic, modern upgrades and amenities that provide both function and elegance.

Please note, there is no elevator in the hotel.

Guest Access:
Each of our guest rooms can be accessed by a keyless door code for ease of entry, and accepts for a zero-interaction check-in/check-out process. Breakfast is served daily in the common area lounge on the first floor. If you have any questions about directions or access to the property, our team would be happy to assist.

How to get the best vacation property experience:

Finding your perfect rental home:

  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the Charleston area area. Book your Charleston area rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have offers and deals for local tours and attractions.

Filter your rental search:

  • Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation dates, and select a spending budget.
  • Walk to King has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you reserve your home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your vacation.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More tips for your stay:

  • Put the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of issues.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Protect your property!
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if a dispute arises.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
