Tips and Tricks to get the best rental home experience:
Get the most from your budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. Book your Charleston area rental in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Some property management companies offer rate reductions for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guide magazines that include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Select dates and spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Captain Steve's Creek Retreat has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available online. If not, email or call the property manager before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your group.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or costs applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
Additional considerations:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of problems.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would back home.
- To make sure damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. text the property manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- When it's time to leave, complete a final walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
