Charleston rental home tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental value:
- In the Charleston area area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
- Book your Charleston area vacation home in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Property management companies sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations and attractions.
Finding the best vacation home in the Charleston area area:
- Start by choosing potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. The Garden Gates
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible online. If they are not listed, email the host before you book the property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or could be applied to your invoice.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
More considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Save the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Note any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are an excellent source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Upon check-out, take a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a fantastic vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
