Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area vacation property experience:
When to visit Charleston & When to book:
- Summer is high season in the Charleston area area. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain discounts for nearby tours and attractions.
Choosing and booking your Charleston area rental home:
- Start by selecting vacation dates and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Sandy Oaks: The Best of Both Worlds! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property owner before booking your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your group.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your family is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
Advice for your stay:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- To ensure that damages are not linked to your stay, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. Get in touch with the rental manager immediately to relay your findings. If there is a dispute, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Upon check-out, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on good reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
