Tricks and tips for getting the best rental home experience:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Charleston area area. Reserve your vacation home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies typically offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Often, property management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guides which often include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- To start, have your family choose the best dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Sandy Oaks: The Best of Both Worlds! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property management company before you reserve the property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
- Looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's phone number to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Record any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of issues.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
