Finding the best Charleston vacation rental experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. To get the best value, change your family's Charleston area vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Property management companies usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area travel guide magazines which include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Start by selecting the best vacation week and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Modern Condo in the heart of DT on East Bay St Prime Location has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property manager before you reserve your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is best for your vacation group.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.
- Is your group looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Advice for a wonderful stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
- Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
