How to find the best Charleston vacation home experience:
When to reserve a Charleston area rental home & When to go:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have coupons for nearby tours and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Start by having your family decide on a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. ? Walk Score 98 ? 1blk to King St. Outdoor Space has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the property owner before reserving the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Advice for your stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your .
- Record any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute is filed.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
