Charleston area vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • In the Charleston area area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. Book your rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property managers usually offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area travel guide magazines which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Make a plan and pick your prefectrental home:

  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Classic Style Sullivan's Island house - Very Charming! 2 blocks to beach\/ 1 Month Minimum Only! has 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before you book the home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask your host about pets before booking.
  • Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To ensure that no damages are attributed to your stay, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. Call the rental manager right away to document any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on great ratings to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best rental home. Remember to be objective.
