Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Charleston area vacation rental experience:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- Summer is high season in Charleston. Book your vacation in the Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitor guides which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Choosing and booking the perfectvacation home:
- Start by choosing the best vacation week and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Historic Charleston Charm has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property manager before reserving your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to establish what is best for your vacation group.
- If there's an individual Charleston area beach you are enamored with, keep an eye out for properties that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
More considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Upon arrival, note any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent many problems.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
