Tricks and tips to get the perfect Charleston area vacation home experience:
Get the most from your rental budget:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking your vacation rental in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a discount.
- Property management companies typically offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Make a plan and choose a perfect Charleston area rental:
- Begin by selecting vacation dates and a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. Gorgeous Quiet Lakefront Beach Cottage Inside Wild Dunes! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before you book the rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what is suitable for your vacation.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Document any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are assessed.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let burglars ruin your holiday.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a terrific stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
