Charleston area vacation rental tips and tricks:

How to get the best rental value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Reserve your Charleston area rental home in Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

Selecting the best vacation rental in the Charleston area area:

  • Choose vacation week and budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Boutique Home & Resort Pool ‘Nantucket’ has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. If they are not listed, call the property owner before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • To make sure damages are not linked to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the rental manager immediately to report any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to propel future bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
