Tips to get the best Charleston area rental home experience:

Finding the best rental home value:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the most suitable vacation home for your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Charleston area attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides have money saving offers on nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Selecting and booking the bestrental:

  • Choose your vacation dates and max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. The Screwed Inn has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what is right for your vacation group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some don't. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
  • Looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.

More considerations:

  • Put the owner's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
  • Note any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected everything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
