Tips to get the best rental experience:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- June, July, and August are high season in Charleston. Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Property management companies frequently offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Finding the perfect rental home in Charleston:
- Select your vacation week and maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Perfect for Groups, Directly off King Street! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If not, email the property management company before you book your home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your group is traveling with pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge additional pet fees.
Have a fantastic stay:
- Get the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many issues.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let thieves spoil your family vacation.
- When it's time to leave, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
