Our top Charleston rental booking tips:

Get the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • The earlier you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are booked early. Reserving your vacation home six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • Summer months are high season in Charleston. To find the best value, try changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • First and foremost, have your family choose dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Explore Historic Charleston All Around You! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. Otherwise, contact the host before booking the property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.

During your stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of difficulties.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a fantastic source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
