Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Finding the best value:

  • To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.

Planning and choosing yourrental home:

  • Choose your dates and spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Adorable Home With Heated Pool has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before reserving the property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or charges could be applied to your contract.

Some things to know before you go:

  • We recommend storing the owner's information in your smartphone.
  • To make certain damages are not attributed to your visit, record any problem areas during check in. Get in touch with the rental manager right away to document any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would at home.
  • At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good reviews to propel more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
