Strategies to get the very best Charleston area vacation home experience:
Sticking to your rental home budget:
- Summer is high season in Charleston. To book the largest rental within budget, we suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Property management companies sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours and attractions.
Choosing and booking the right Charleston area rental home:
- Start by selecting vacation dates and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Two Bedroom Suite Sum has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property owner before you book the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what is optimal for your family.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your visit:
- Get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home.
- Upon arrival, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors disrupting your peaceful home. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
