How to book the best rental home experience:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in Charleston. To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Charleston area vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides contain coupons for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Filter your rental search:

  • Choose vacation week and max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Vacation Villa (ADA) 'The Mediterranean Palm’ has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available on booking pages. If not, contact the host before booking the property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .

More tips for your visit:

  • Take a copy of the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your life at home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
