Tips for getting the best Charleston rental home experience:
When to visit Charleston & When to reserve a Charleston area rental home:
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in Charleston. Reserve your rental property in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.
Choosing the perfect vacation rental:
- Begin by choosing your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. The Madison- Historic Charleston Single House with Double Porches & Roof Deck has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is normally accessible online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you book your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- If there's a certain Charleston area attraction you love, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Advice for a smooth stay:
- Take a copy of the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To make certain that no damages are linked to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. Contact the rental manager immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything at check-out. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
